The health benefits of the Dalmatian cuisine

No matter whether you call it Mediterranean, Croatian or Dalmatian cuisine one thing is clear – it is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.

Based on olive oil, fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, Dalmatian cuisine will help you keep in shape. Researchers have found that people who follow a Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol. But let’s see the health benefits of ingredients mostly used in Croatian cuisine.

Olives (olive oil)

Welcome to the island of olives. Šipan is actually entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the island

with the most olive trees in relation to its population. Olives are very rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. They help prevent blood clots and enhance fertility and the reproductive system. Almost 90 percent of olives in Croatia are used for making olive oil. Why don’t you try to use it in your salads?


As you probably already know, lemon is rich in vitamin C, B6 and A. It not only helps with digestion but alsoimproves hair, skin and teeth. Just a glass of homemade lemonade can help you with kidney stones.  Mix it with olive oil and enjoy a health bomb that will keep you in shape.


Almonds are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamin E and magnesium. Most people don’t get enough magnesium. So only a quarter of a cup full of almonds will provide you with  150mh of magnesium. Eat it as a light snack, or add them to the main dish or in dessert.


Asparagus are low in fat and calories, and therefore are a great choice for a light healthy meal. For the perfect breakfast pair asparagus with a hard-boiled egg. The Combination of fibre-rich asparagus and a protein-rich egg will provide you with asatisfying meal that will set you up perfectly for the day.
